Redevelopment of a historic old-town site

The project consists of the creation of a brand-new art gallery at the heart of Gibraltar’s old town. The museum presents a diverse range or spaces, including exhibition areas, a children’s art centre, cafés and an accessible green roof.

World-class contemporary artwork is displayed here, with a particular emphasis in modern sculptures. The Foundation also promotes emerging local and international talent and encourages the youngest to explore their creativity.

The redevelopment comprises the restoration and preservation of the original façades from the existing building, dated from the 19th Century, which once served as the Gibraltar’s Governor’s residence. The remaining spaces extend in the form of two new-build interconnected blocks of three and four storeys, respectively.

The project includes several features and technical challenges such as internal double-height spaces, curved façades, organic staircases, intensive green roofs and large open spaces.   Besides, the level difference with the surrounding adjoining buildings involves complex foundation systems.

NOSA undertook extensive coordination with all parties and delivered efficient solutions, managing to reduce structure-related costs by near 20% and providing more sustainable options.
