Refurbishment and extension of the existing St Joseph’s School

The existing school site is circa 8,400m2 in a largely north-south orientation. The project comprises the reconfiguration and refurbishment of most of the existing school buildings on the school campus, and the introduction of a new extension and new facilities along the central north-south area, and on the eastern half of the site. This will improve the educational facilities throughout and provide two distinct campuses, each with its own identity.

The main teaching block of the old South Barracks site was built between 1730 and 1735 and consists of rubble filled masonry walls, timber floor joists and timber roof trusses.

The sports hall appears to be of more recent construction and consists of steel portal frames supported on concrete foundations to the East side. The other side of the sports hall, towards the playground, is supported on a RC retaining wall.

The proposed extension was constructed using a RC frame consisting of columns, shear walls and flat slabs supported on an RC piled raft.

The proposal involved strengthening of existing foundations to the existing sports hall as the existing playground area was lowered to the same level as the teaching block.

The project involved an in-depth site investigation to establish the different types of soil and their distribution along the site footprint.
